First Day at the New School
Well, my first day at work is over and I'm dog-tired and ready for sleep. It's really draining doing new things all day long! From learning how to work new patient management and information systems, to managing conditions I've never treated before, to meeting a bunch of new people and trying to remember their names, it's been quite a day.
Up early, a nice 15 minute drive to work, then a morning of training and meetings in which my rotations were sketched out. My first 2 months will be spent in the relatively unfamiliar disciplines of radiation and then medical oncology, and then my 22 months of surgical rotations will start at the beginning of September. It looks like I'm going to get a good mix of exposure in different surgical specialities which will be of a lot of use to me. It seems that I'll be spending quite a bit of time in abdominal & pelvic cancer surgery, which is what I'm here to do after all. I'm also hoping to get some exposure to liver and gynae cancer surgery which will be very useful too...
Apart from getting enough new usernames and passwords to stuff a mango with, I also got my new desk sorted out and did a couple of clinics in lung and soft tissue cancer radiotherapy, which is all new to me at the moment. I'm sure I'll pick up the basics in a week or two, but at the moment I'm really just feeling my way. Apart from my on-call nights, I've got no scheduled operating at all for the next 2 MONTHS, so it's going to be a bit odd until I get used to it.
Anyway, tomorrow is more my cup of tea, with some intestinal cancer work, so I'll hopefully feel a bit more at home.
Off to bed now
