Picture Update & Happy Canada Day
Hi again, J here. Sorry for the delay in writing again, but the last 3 days have been a bit busy, what with buying a car, getting insurance, getting (matching) mobile phones, buying car licence plates, getting bank drafts and leaving our rental car back to the airport in one piece (quite a big undertaking, as neither of us had really driven alone here before). I also spent the afternoon registering as a resident at the Foothills Medical Centre and I'm starting to get a taste of what it's going to be like practising surgery in North America for the next 2 years... More details on that later (i.e. tomorrow) but for now it's late on Wednesday night (00:10 here, 07:10 back home) and there's just time to post a few photos as promised before... Some are recent, but more are from our trip here in May, when it was still snowing...
Shot taken from our living room window about 5 minutes ago
View of the Rockies from our living room window
Calgary on a cloudy day
Some skyscrapers
The Bow River in May
Our new place of work, the Foothills Medical Centre
The Calgary Tower by day
They light the flame on top of the Tower when the Calgary Flames ice hockey team are playing at home - WOW! (this was when they beat the Detroit Redwings in the Stanley Cup)
The Calgary LRT (Light Rail Transport system : good public transport - not like home!)
Impressive downtown building
Coffee shop P (looking very well)
Downtown on a sunny day
"The Driver"
And then the snow started...
And it snowed.... (in May)
Still can't believe it ... Snow in May!
Mother Goose and her family beside the Bow River in the snow
A couple of pictures from the resort of Banff when we were there in May
Big Mountain (?Tunnel Mountain) near Banff
Bendy Canadian river on the eastern slopes of the Rockies
Some trees and mountains
P near Banff
Me marvelling at a mountain
Me in Banff
Weird-looking hoodoos near Banff
So that's all for now...
Time for bed, on this Canada Day, July 01 2004. In the rest of the Commonwealth it's Dominion Day apparently. It's a big thing here, as the country is 137 years old, and it's a national holiday, which accounts for my not starting work in the morning, as originally planned. But the trash men still come at 08:00 tomorrow, so I've gotta be up at 07:30 for Put Out the Trash Day!
According to here:
Canada Day is a celebration of Canadian nationalism, heritage and pride. Canada became self-governing on July 1st, 1867, with the passage of the British North America Act (BNA Act) in the British Parliament. The holiday was originally known as "Dominion Day". It was changed to Canada Day by the Canadian Parliament on October 27, 1982
So Canada's really not that old...
Anyway, we're planning to head downtown to Fort Calgary on the LRT during the day tomorrow to learn a bit about the history of the place and then there's fireworks at the Canada Olympic Park at 23:00. I've also got the Friday off work, as my boss is away for the long weekend, and then I'm getting stuck in properly on July 5. So we're planning to take our shiny new car for a little drive up to Jasper in the Rockies to see some real scenery and maybe a bear or two! Oh, and we've booked tickets to go see a rodeo as part of the Calgary stampede on Sunday July 11. So until next time ...
YEE-HAH! and HAPPY CANADA DAY!
