Fender Bender Friday
Part of the purpose of this blog is to keep everyone at home up with our news out here 'as it happens', so here's some hot breaking news:- (this all happened at about 10 o'clock onwards, and it's now just after 12 noon)
I was on call last night and got very little sleep, so when Paula came to work I took the car home to get some sleep. P mentioned that the petrol level was low, and we are going to Banff for the weekend, so I thought I'd be good and get some petrol for our journey on my way home. I pulled into a gas station close to the hospital at about 10 o'clock, filled up and paid and then went to drive out of the 'lot' (i.e. the forecourt). I headed for an exit from which I could turn right onto the road home. There was a big purple-coloured van in fron of me at the exit, moving forwards, so I pulled up behind them to wait until they had turned and then I could turn too. Unfortunately, the van stopped moving forwards, and then shot backwards at speed, slamming into the front right side of our wee car! Don't worry though - I was fine, and so was the other driver. It was just a 'fender bender'. I was far enough back that I could see the impact about to happen but I couldn't get out of the way or even honk a warning. So we had call the police, wait 30 mins for them to come, fill in accident statements and get a formal accident report. The lady who was driving the van has been found 'at fault' and will get a ticket for dangerous reversing. I have a damage report sticker which has to be displayed on the windscreen until the car is fixed. So here's what it looks like:

A bit bashed in
As you can see, the bumper is a bit bashed in, the radiator grille is damaged and the hood (bonnet) is lifted up at one side, but the lights are OK. Our 'bug deflector' (the clear plastic bit) is also shattered. It's probably safe enough to drive the car, but we can't really get the hood open and closed so we're going to play it safe and hire a car for the next few days on our jaunt to Banff. I've been in touch with the insurance people already and I'm waiting for the loss adjuster to get in touch later on before we can get an estimate for repairs. As today is the first day of a long weekend for Labor Day, it's probably going to be next week before we can get the repairs done, but at least we'll be off in Banff getting our heads showered for the next few days anyway. I suppose it's just one of those things, but it is a bit of a pain to have to get the car fixed etc. Never mind, at least no-one was hurt, right? See you soon, J
