Thursday night update (All Fixed Up)
Hey, it's Thursday night here! Where does the week go? Spent all day operating today - 8 hours on one case, the kind of thing I came here for in the first place. The fellowship is really starting to move forwards.
Who's the guy in the hat?
Also spent last night at a meeting of the Calgary Surgical Society - it was nice to be invited, and it was good to get to talk to a variety of Calgary surgeons from a variety of hospitals here. It's surprising how much we all have in common. I met some of the guys I'll be working with next year too, and I'm really looking forward to my next few rotations.
The other big news today is that our wee car is back home again, all fixed and shiny new! They told us it would take 7 or 10 days to fix, and it ended up done in four! The insurance situation still isn't sorted out, so we paid the 500-dollar deductible (excess) and will claim it back again. We also took the opportunity to get the windscreen replaced (the big crack was starting to bug us!)

All Better
New Windscreen and all Polished Too!
We're still keeping hold of our rental Monster Truck until Monday so we can take it to Edmonton for our weekend away. I'm giving a talk at a cancer meeting tomorrow, and Paula has managed to wangle a meeting in the city on the same day, so we're staying there on Friday and Saturday night, and coming home on Sunday. The main attraction in the city is apparently the West Edmonton Mall, which is the largest one on the planet, with an indoor rollercoaster, indoor skating rink, indoor bungee jump and lots more. Watch this space for more details over the weekend... Anyway, here's some piccies of the Monster Truck (it's a Chevrolet Venture, 8 seats in three rows, really high driving position, great view - I'll be sorry to give it back again):
A Bit Too Big
Just about fits in the garage...
P has also taken to bringing my wee digital camera with her to work, and has been taking a few piccies on the way. Have a look:
Sunrise this morning (as we left the house)
Half-asleep but driving
Tuscany Boulevard Sunrise 07:00
Crowchild Trail 07:08
Dalhousie Station 07:14
The hospital's multi-storey car park 07:20 (sun's up properly now)
Snow flurries are forecast for Sunday in Calgary, so we're quite likely to get some in Edmonton, which is 3 hours further north... Melissa and Stephen are almost certain to get some serious snow while they're here - don't forget to bring your winter woolies!
More birthday news... we got a fantastic fruit/cheese/chocolate basket from the Robsons on Saturday - many thanks, it's much appreciated! And Melissa & Stephen, thanks for Kill Bill 1 and Sock Monkey, and Simon and Sandy, thanks for Quantum Psychology, Shawshank Redemption. And Denise and Roy, thanks for the Amazon voucher - I got A River Runs Through it, McSweeney's Quarterly and Viewtiful Joe for the PS2. And thanks also to the Robsons for another Amazon voucher, which I still haven't spent (still working on it!). And thanks to the Zschockes for The Da Vinci Code, very intriguing... And thanks to Richard and Emma too for the book on hiking in Calgary.
Great Fruit Basket
Just the fruit
Oh, and we have also received our final, full Alberta driving licences! We are now official!
We're really looking forward to seeing Melissa and Stephen next week - it's going to be great seeing them again and catching up with stuff from home. We have 'bookings' for next Easter and the Stampede already, but no-one has been brave enough to volunteer to come see us in the winter - do we have any takers?
Anyway, we'll be in touch again when we're back from Edmonton on Sunday - in the meantime, don't pray for snow!
