City of Calgary Declares State of Emergency

1045 RMT Monday 20 June 2005

Well, our visitors have taken the rain back home with them, but it looks like we're still in trouble...

We've had over 200mm of rain in the last 2 weeks, with the Bow and Elbow Rivers bursting their banks, localised flooding and people being evacuated from low-lying parts of the city, as well as Bragg Creek. The Mayor was on the TV on Saturday warning all citizens to stay away from the rivers and banks in the city, but Simon and I went down to see the flooding at Bowness anyway and got some great photos without being drowned (pics to follow).

We currently have a State of Emergency and water restriction in place as the water-treatment plants can't process the flood water as fast as it's coming in, and we're not allowed to have baths or long showers, use any water outside at all, or run the dishwasher or washing machine unless they're completely full! We're even trying to avoid flushing the toilet when we pee! Yesterday the city used 400 million litres of water, and the water treatment plants produced only 300 million litres, so we're running out of clean water fast. It's the most rain that Calgary has ever had in living memory and is probably part of a once-in-a-100-years storm. Of course, as soon as the day came for Simon & Sandy to leave, the rain stopped as if by magic and the sun came out - it was 21oC yesterday! We were disappointed with the weather while they were here, as it stopped us getting out into the Rockies, canoeing, etc. but at least they got 3 or 4 good days last week when they were in Banff.

Sebastian was a complete angel - he really is wonderful, and a real smartie-pants (he knows loads of words already, and his favourite colours seem to be pink and lilac). It was a real pleasure and a new experience for the two of us to have him in the house, and Simon & Sandy let us baby-sit him a couple of time so they could get out to a restaurant and to the pictures on their own.

Anyway, life is returning to semi-normal for the next couple of weeks, and then I'll be home again for a bit - WOW! - it's gonna be weird being back in Carrick (especially without P)!

Looking forward to seeing all of you again (Vanessa especially)

Love

J (&P)

PS Keep up to date on the developing disaster here at local radio station CHQR
