the 'garden'
Just a quick post with a few pics of our attempt at gardening in Calgary. Those of you who have been here know that the 'garden' at the back of the house is not readily accessible without going through the basement, so we have decided just to construct a few pots on the deck. You get to the deck from the door that leads from the kitchen/dining area, so its easier to get at.
Anyway, I was worried about the pots for the first couple of weeks because the weather was dry, warm and windy, and I think I told you earlier that I felt that it was a bit like trying to grow things in a desert. Of course, if you've read the last couple of blogs you will know that we have now had over 150mm of rain since the start of June, and now I'm worried about the pots being water-logged!! Just goes to show, you need to be careful what you wish for!
Having said that, I think the moisture has kicked off some germination in some of the seeds...
So here are some of things that have been planted...

Some little yellow flowers in pots - hopefully these will fill out a bit over the next few weeks...

These were the lillies that started off in the basement (as per recommendations from the garden centre). I think they got a bit 'leggy' down there, but I was glad we didn't put them outside earlier than 24th May because we still had several sharp frosts before then which would have done them in altogether. They look a bit straggly in the picture, but they all have good big buds, and I think they'll flower eventually.

These on the left are three little cherry tomato plants. People tell me that you can grow cherry tomatoes successfully outside in Calgary, but I remain to be convinced. Anyway - worth a go. The pot to the right contains a few courgette seeds - no sign of germination yet, but fingers crossed. The half filled pot in the front contains some parsley (ran out of soil, but had a pot and some seeds...!). I think we'll get another couple of pots in the next day or so and try to grow some more herbs.

These little green shoots (look very carefully) are scallions which we have planted in a little trough at the front edge of the deck. We also have planted some carrot seeds and I think I have convinced myself that they are coming through as well.
So that's it for now - will keep you posted on the horticultural goings on...
